After several falls, increasing care needs and several hospital stays my Dad agreed that he would benefit from extra care housing.
We began to look around and found a lovely facility which was closer to me and only a couple of miles up the road from his house - IT WAS PERFECT 🤩
Dad began to get excited, he had something to look forward to …. FINALLY. 💞
While we waited for placement…..the falls continued, the worry grew and the hospital admissions became more frequent. 😔
During this period and before his final admission to hospital I had requested a care needs assessment which HE NEEDED TO BE ABLE TO MOVE INTO HIS NEW HOME.
This SHOULD have been a simple process ….. but as anyone who has been through this will understand IT WASN’T
As always I went into professional mode, I KNEW THE PROCESS but I was fobbed off, blindsided by policy and baffled by the system
It had taken A LOT for my Dad to come to this decision himself and as a family we were relieved - THIS WAS HUGE FOR HIM and so we needed to make the process as smooth as possible AND as quick as possible to ensure he was safe, had TIME to enjoy the remainder of his life and finally get somewhat of a life back.
Back to the needs assessment ....
The flat was located in a different local authority and this it seems was the problem - cue a game of responsibility tennis 🎾
‘We will only do the assessment for care needs provided within our authority’
‘That’s incorrect - ‘they’ need to do the current needs assessment and THEN we will do ours’
‘No, that’s not right - it’s our policy to do ……’
This went on and on! I stayed polite, professional and reasonable - this began to change to desperate and pleading -
I even received a call from a fellow ‘professional’ within the social care team which gave me a glimmer of hope, but even that fell flat on its face.
Eventually I contacted Healthwatch who were amazing, and within 2 days it was sorted strange that!
Understanding the rights of individuals and complexities of the system helped me - BUT my god it was STRESSFUL and EMOTIONALLY DRAINING
This is why I want to help others, this is why I’ve developed Helping You Care™️
I’m Suzanne Janvier — carer, CEO, mum, wife, and professional plate-spinner. I looked after my dad Paul through Parkinson’s and cancer, and even with 25+ years in health and social care, I still found myself drowning in jargon, paperwork, and “computer says no” moments.
After losing my Dad, I felt a huge need to help others who are battling a system that is so difficult to understand. In my career I have helped hundreds of individuals and their carers get the support they need - and I want to extend that to more people. The knowledge and experience I have has taken me decades to obtain - the mistakes, the wins, the set backs - I understand how it feels not be to listened to and it is my goal to provide this knowledge, guidance and above all else - support to others.
